artist statement

In my current work, I fuse the language of text and textiles to investigate the victimization of women in family space.  Textiles are materials of everyday life, which historically have been central to the role of women.  Textile making has typically been associated with utility and functionality, however, women have expanded the techniques to soften, beautify and adorn their environments and bodies.

My primary use of fiber and thread is an extension of myself and is inherent to who I am. I find the repetitive nature of textile techniques very meditative and therapeutic.  Fiber is warm and pleasurable to handle and the vibrancy and depth of colour, as well as the wonderful textures that can be achieved using this medium, is what excites me about fiber work.  My work takes form of installations, art quilts and felt work that reference my personal experience and the social struggle that some women currently face.

I am interested in the issues related to Violence Against Women and in particular, domestic violence.  Women experience domestic violence more often than we think.  Through my work, I am interested in giving victims a voice, to help reduce the judgment that society places on those who have been victimized.
